Slate Roofer Profile: Martin Bungartz

February 9, 2016

Here at Vermont Slate, we love to highlight our creative roofers from time to time. We recently had the chance to sit down and chat with Martin Bungartz, a slate roofer out of Benton Harbor, Michigan! Martin is incredibly talented and designs extremely creative & custom slate projects. He’s done just about everything, from designing slate siding with flag patterns cut into the stone to cutting & overlaying other patterns in the slate with the utmost precision.

Martin’s business, MB Renaissance Construction LLC, was originally established by his great-grandfather in Germany in 1890. Germany requires roofers to apprentice for 3 years before they can become a certified roofer; however, Martin was able to acquire the certification after only 19 months in 1979 since he achieved the highest grades in his classes. In 1983, after 4 years of additional studies, he achieved his Master Certificate in roofing and certification as a Technical Manager for Roof, Wall, and Sealing Techniques. He is now authorized to teach and demonstrate to other apprentices his roofing techniques. Today, in addition to slate roofing, Martin also does metal roofing, coppergutters, and roofpiping.

Check out these photos from a job he recently completed using our Cupa 12 slate below and be sure to visit his facebook page if you want to hire him for something this gorgeous and custom for your home!
